How to Cite Other Sources in Chicago Style

In our citation examples we use the following color coding:

  • Red – Author
  • Blue – Title of book/article/charter/webpage
  • Pink – Date
  • Orange – Website/Publisher
  • Turquoise – Place of publication
  • Sienna – Pages
  • Gray – URL/database/website where the source is retrieved
  • Peach – Additional information about the source (i.e. its type, specific features etc.)

Single author citation

Example:

Jackson, Sean. “The Basics of Cloud Computing.” Lecture, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, October 10, 2015. Footnote citation: 1. Sean Jackson, “The Basics of Cloud Computing” (lecture, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, October 10, 2015).

Two or more authors

Example:

In Chicago style citation personal communication should be mentioned in footnotes only. No bibliography entry is required.
