Term Paper vs. Research Paper
Posted on February 20, 2007
This is tougher than the battle of the sexes, actually. Does anybody know the difference? Somebody? Please…. Okay, than we’ll just make a step by step evaluation of both a term paper and a research paper.
A term paper is a semester paper that is assigned to you by the teacher to see how well the studied information was understood. It can be on a certain book, or materials, or whatever else will come to your teacher’s mind. Bottom-line is that the term paper can come in any shape. As a knowledge check it can be an essay, a research paper, or a project. There are lots of variants.
Preparations for an assignment like this take some time. First of all, you need to pay attention when listening to the teacher. Try doing it from the very beginning, although sometimes it can be so frustrating. Also, take notes. If you feel like yours are not as detailed as they have to be, try to exchange with a friend to fill in on some blanks left.
A subject for the term paper needs to be taken from a book. Basic requirements to sources are the same pretty much everywhere. They have to be available on campus, and need to be no more than 20 years old. Duh.
The structure of a term paper is general, according to the variety of assignments a term paper includes into itself. There has to be an introduction, supportive paragraphs, and a conclusion. How long each of these parts has to be is up to you. Act in accordance with the situation.
Research paper, in its turn, is a standardized assignment that can pop up whenever your teacher wants it, unfortunately. This paper will require your thorough examinations. They don’t have to be as deep, as preparations for writing a dissertation, though. Still, schedule the work. Don’t put it till the very last minute, trying to write a good paper fifteen hours before it is due.
Before starting (or as a start), choose an appropriate topic. The best idea is to have teacher’s approval on it. Your teacher can prevent you from choosing a bad (broad or narrow) topic. He can also advise you what sources to use.
The structure of a research paper is more complex than that of an essay. An introduction has to have a thesis, which is usually a second (if not first) sentence. The body has to be divided not only into topics, but into subtopics, as well. If you have 1, than there has to be 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. The conclusion must be strong and summarizing.
Take this into consideration, if a term paper comes to you in a shape of research paper writing.
Research paper is not the most difficult academic assignment; and still, it does take a lot of time!
