A hook sentence also requires some interesting information – new facts, original ideas, shocking statistics, or any other techniques to make your audience want to get acquainted with the content of a particular paragraph.
A topic sentence, however, is just a blank statement if it doesn’t have strong support. This is where the supportive sentences have to appear. They come out of the first sentence to give readers not only information, but facts and evidence, as well. It is especially obvious in persuasive and argumentative essays, where a writer has to make his audience believe that his position is the only one correct. Supportive sentences must provide details and facts, as well as opinions. For small essay papers, seven or eight supportive sentences are just enough. For big writings, the more – the better. It is a usual problem not only for beginners, but for experienced writers, too. All of them ask each other the same question: “If I write a long paragraph, will it be interesting enough to read?” The answer is “Yes”, as long as you understand what you are writing about, and provide quality academic writing and interesting, important information.
Finally, every beginning must have an end. Every paragraph must have a closing sentence. A closing sentence restates the main idea of the paragraph. One of the biggest mistakes here is to simply repeat the already stated idea. But a skillful and experienced writer knows hat the idea has to be reminded accurately. It is easy to do by saying the same, but using different words. Closing sentence serves two purposes: first of all, it reminds the reader your point and, therefore, makes it stronger; it also indicates that the thought is completed, and the next paragraph will give the reader something new to think about.
Some new and inexperienced writers often feel uncomfortable when beginning their writing assignments. Actually, this is the hardest stage. After getting started, the ideas will appear one after another. You can do some preparation steps, however. In the beginning, you can take a piece of paper, and write down all the possible answers and thoughts concerning your essay question. Also, make sure you’ve collected all the important information and organized it the way it has to be placed in an essay paper.
Now start writing, following the scheme above. Begin with the topic sentence, give as many supportive sentences as your essay paper is able to accept (depending on its size and the depth of the topic and researches), and finish with a closing sentence. If needed, provide your reader with a transition sentence – a smooth shift from one point or paragraph to another.
Keep your sentences short and clear. Don’t overload them with punctuation marks and complex constructions. When writing, stay focused on the main idea. This way you won’t have to write everything over just because “it doesn’t correspond to the main topic”.
Finally, make a revision. Look for punctuation, grammar, and edit spelling mistakes. Read your text aloud to see how it “flows”. If there is something that sounds clumsy, better correct it before turning the assignment in. After all the work is done neatly, exhale with relief.
