MLA essay style is the one which embraces the rules of the Modern Language Association. MLA essay style is based on the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. (2003). This article is aimed at clarifying the most significant features of MLA style writing. It will also be based on the Manual cited above.
MLA Essay Style: Title Page
- Though it is a rather debatable question whether an essay done in MLA format needs a title page, many professors require this from the students.
- If you are assigned to write such a page, be sure to include the following information about your work: the title, the descriptive title (if necessary), your name, the subject course, your professor’s name, the name of the university, the date of submission.
- If the title page is not required from you, present the cited information in the top left corner (but for the title, the descriptive title, and the course). Double-space the entire text. The title of the essay should be centered on the next line.
MLA Essay Style: General Requirements
- Leave 1 inch margins on all sides;
- Head all pages, but for the title one with your name and the page number. Place the heading in the top right corner, half an inch from the top of the page, flushed with the right margin.
- Indent the first line of each paragraph;
- Follow the period and any punctuation mark by 1 space.
MLA Essay Style: Works Mentioned In the Essay
- If the work you referred to was published separately, underline its title;
- If the works are parts of other editions, use “” around the title;
- Separate the title and the subtitle of the work with a colon;
- Insert short quotations (not longer than 4 typed lines) into the sentence with “” marks;
- For long quotations use some introductory words, then double-space and type the quotation indented one inch from the left margin.
- Try to quote exactly what was in the original text. In case of any changes enclose them in square brackets. If something is omitted show it with . . .
MLA Essay Style: Referencing
- Put the source reference in the text ;
- Include there the author’s name and the page number;
- When the note is too long to go in the text, use endnotes.
