Being one of the largest states in the United States, Texas, has gone through a lot of stages to become what it is now. It is known that for nearly a decade, Texas was the Lone Star State having sovereignty. The story began in 1821 when Mexico was granted independence from Spain.
Back then, Mexicans occupied the territory of northern Texas the was scarcely inhabited, so they let the Anglo-Americans in for a living and for creating an army to fight off raiders. Steven Austin was the first to introduce 300 new families to the area. Even though these people should have leaned Spanish and converted to the Catholic faith, they decided to identify themselves as separate colonies.
The population divided itself into Tejanos (Mexican residents) and Texans (the new white settlers) who either worked together or despised each other. Texas and Mexico’s relationship came to a downfall, so Texans got ready to take radical actions. Eventually, the introduction of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, guaranteed the state’s independence from Mexico.
However, the freedom cost settlers a Texas Revolution causing massacre by the Mexican governor, Santa Anna. The Texans under the leadership of a revolutionary Sam Houston managed to defeat the governor with his military making the Mexican president admit the independence of Texas in May of 1836.
Later that year, a Constitutional Convention officially declared Texas to be independent and wrote the constitution of the nation, establishing a republican system of governing with David Burnet in the head. Also, in 1936 the Congress of the Republic of Texas introduces a flag with five-star golden on a dark blue background, which became known as a Lone Star-Flag (later they added two white stripes and red color to its design).
In 1837 the Republic attempted to annex from the United States, and they managed to be accepted to the Union in 1844 with the help of James Polk. Even though the population was not significant, new settlers were moving to the area. The cattle left by Mexicans helped entrepreneurs establish an economic situation by creating a new business that years later turned into a cowboy culture famous all over the world.
After the state was annexed, Mexico and the United States tore up diplomatic relations because of the border claims. Thus, the Mexico-American war took place in Texas that lasted until American troops invaded Mexico. The two-year conflict ended with the signing of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Mexico consented to give the territory of Texas under the U.S. control and set the border at the Rio Grande. The boundaries of Texas were finally established by the Compromise of 1850, and Texas conceded to give land to other nearby states such as Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. After the war period, many migrants flew to Texas, bringing African American slaves with them.
Today the distinctive flag with a star and the name “The Lone Star Republic” are the primary features of Texas symbolizing its independence. A lot of enterprises, bars, cafes, and hotels were named as “Lone Star” across Texas.
