Describe the events of the presidential election of 1928 in America.

Herbert Hoover won the 1928 election and became the 31st President of the United States of America. Hoover’s key factors to winning represent his innovative ideas about the progressive view on the country’s economic growth and support for the less fortunate. Americans were equally impressed by Hoover’s humanitarian work conducted at the time of World War I and in the Great Mississippi Flood in 1927.

Explanation:

Herbert Hoover was a candidate from the republicans on the Presidential election of 1928. Before the presidency, Hoover was a Secretary of Commerce, which provided him a strong foundation for the election in the possible future. His primary rival was supposed to be Calvin Coolidge, the current President at the time.

However, before the starting of the 1928 Presidential election, Coolidge announced he was not going to seek the second term. On those conditions, Hoover instantly took dominant positions in the historical elections of 1928.

Hoover conducted a safe, confident campaign. It was mostly held on radio and newsletter platforms. He delivered several speeches to the electorate on the radio describing his prosperous plans for the country’s future after the Presidential election of 1928.

Herbert’s primary opponent was the four-term governor of New York Alfred Smith, who led a hostile campaign building himself quite a negative image of careless New York man. He was additionally a strongly religious Catholic man, which did not play well for him, because of the Anti-Catholicism campaigns of that time.

Smith received a lot of hatred concerning his political persona. Numerous Protestant preachers warned their people in churches saying that voting for Smith on the 1928 elections is the same as voting for the Devil. The democrats expected Smith to bring the party together and defeat Hoover once and for all, but it turned impossible.

Hoover’s reputation was spotless, and he had the support of many. The Republicans portrayed their candidate as a talented engineer and a successful self-made man. He was perceived as a strong leader as a Secretary of, and as an outstanding businessman with a prosperous vision for the USA’s economic growth.

But certainly, Hoover’s most significant advantage in 1928’s election was his association with the two previous Republican administrations and their legacy of commercial success. The candidate was also a known supporter of the equal rights movement.

Furthermore, the National Women’s Party awarded Hoover with an endorsement of his support for the Equal Rights Amendment, which indeed Smith was opposed to. Considering all the facts Smith had very little chances of winning, while his opponent was a strong leader of the 1928 presidential election. Throughout the whole presidential campaigning period, Herbert Hoover maintained firm dominant positions

By the day of the presidential election, Hoover successfully won primaries in many states with the support of women, business elite and progressive electors. In November, he won 58 percent of the popular vote and 444 electoral votes to Al Smith’s 87.

He secured forty states, including New York – his opponent’s hometown, several commonly Democratic states in the South, and all of the Border States. Herbert Hoover won the election in a landslide against his Democratic opponent Albert Smith.
