Flogging is “an act punishment whereby someone is beaten with a stick or whip” (Jacoby 197). The modern society should learn a lot from the Puritans in order to deal with every felon. Several arguments have been presented in order to support flogging. Many people believe that flogging is an acceptable form of torture that does not mutilate or kill (Jacoby 197). Public whipping should become the best solution towards dealing with murder and burglary. The practice will dissuade more individuals from engaging in various criminal activities.
Many people argue that prisons expose inmates to new dangers. Jacoby observes that “the risk of being raped, murdered, or beaten is extremely high in many penitentiaries” (198). Studies have indicated that many inmates are raped every year. This malpractice affects the lives of many nonviolent offenders.
At the same time, the society continues to send more people to such reformatories. The horrors associated with imprisonment should therefore be reexamined in order to embrace flogging. The public will also be able to disgrace such wrongdoers (Jacoby 198). The practice will eventually discourage more young individuals from engaging in various criminal activities.
Imprisonment is “embraced by many people as the penalty of choice for every kind of offense” (Jacoby 197). This practice has produced new problems that continue to affect the socio-economic aspects of many societies. For instance, insecurity levels are currently on the rise. The current justice system also explains why many criminals do not go to prison. Such individuals commit various crimes thus making their societies insecure. Many criminals “know how to get away with various offenses” (Jacoby 198). This reason explains why imprisonment cannot address most of the issues affecting the global society today.
The cost of keeping thousands of criminals in different prisons is horrendous. This is the case because the government’s annual expenditure for every offender is 30,000 dollars. This high cost continues to affect the welfare of more people in the society. Majority of the targeted ex-prisons do not come out reformed (Jacoby 197). According to different studies, many criminals acquire new tactics and ideas from such prisons. This situation explains why new crimes and murders are recorded every day. Such “prisons have become graduate schools of criminal studies” (Jacoby 197). The government should therefore undertake numerous measures in order to deal with this problem.
The article by Jeff Jacoby is very intriguing and inspirational. It encourages the reader to reexamine the issue of flogging. The practice has the potential to address the major problems facing the modern society. It is agreeable that prisons harden many offenders and murderers. Flogging will discourage more people from engaging in criminal activities. Flogging will reduce the costs associated with imprisonment (Jacoby 198). New offenders will also be encouraged to become responsible citizens.
In conclusion, the government should be advised to bring back flogging because it has the potential to deal with various criminal activities. Flogging is a positive practice that can equip more citizens with positive lessons (Jacoby 197). This strategy will eventually discourage more people from engaging in various criminal activities. This humiliating experience can equip more people with the best social values. Members of the public will focus on the best practices and actions. This approach will eventually deal with crime in every society.
