Music of the 20th Century and Beyond

Introduction

This paper is an analysis of two musical pieces from the classical and electronic music periods. The focus will be made to identify why these musical pieces fit into the classical and electronic music categories. A definition of the musical eras will be done, alongside an analysis of how the respective musical categories rate, in terms of musical characteristics. Finally, an analysis of the importance of these musical pieces in today’s musical composition will be done. These analyses will be done systematically.

Suite for Piano, Menuet, and Trio

Suite for piano is a perfect representation of classical music. It was composed by Arnold Schoenberg. The musical piece belongs to Menuet and trio which is part of the four stages of classical era music. There are many characteristics of classical music which sets it apart from other musical styles.

These characteristics are also true for Suite for piano, Menuet and trio because they are the same characteristics that categorize the musical piece into classical music. For instance, the musical piece has a sharp contrast of mood which is characteristic of classical era music. These moods change frequently, and they represent a sharp contrast in moods, such as elation and depression.

Nonetheless, these mood variations are strongly contained by the musical composer. Classical music also has a flexibility of rhythm which suite for piano, Menuet and Trio also possesses. The musical piece, therefore, has a wealth of rhythmical flexibility which includes unexpected pauses, notes and such as musical features. The sudden change in note lengths also exposes the strong inclination of the musical piece to classical music.

Poeme Electronique

Poeme Electronique was produced by Edgard Varese, and it is a special composition of its time because it did not conform to conventional musical pieces. Nonetheless, the musical piece is an electronic composition because it has a strong liberation of musical features and it contains musical noises which are not ordinarily considered to be part of the music.

Electronic music is usually produced using automated methods, using tools such as electronic guitars and telharmonium. This type of music is usually considered “western,” but in recent times it has become increasingly popular. Poeme Electronique is a perfect representation of this musical genre because it contains electronic music technology and is produced using electronic music technology.

Importance in Today’s Musical Reality

The importance of the above musical pieces in today’s musical composition is immense because they have been part of the musical evolution which is evident in the 21st century. For instance, Poeme Electronique was part of the electronic music evolution that birthed the development of music software.

This evolution was exclusively part of a wider inclusion of computer technology in present-day musical creation. Suite for Piano, Menuet and Trio is part of the classical music revolution that saw the development of present-day musical genres through the understanding of historical musical compositions.

Classical music, therefore, stands as an important part of today’s musical history because it defines the origins of today’s music. Moreover, classical music serves as a heritage of most musical genres. Suite for Piano, Menuet, and Trio, is a fraction of this heritage.

Conclusion

This paper identifies that Suite for Piano, Menuet, and Trio and Poeme Electronique fall in the categories of classical and electronic music, respectively. The latter is considered part of the electronic music composition because it contains numerous “noise” elements associated with present-day electronic music.

The former is, however, termed a classical piece of music because it falls in the third phase of a classical music revolution. Both musical categories serve the purposes of defining the growth of music.
