One Response to “Dental School Essay”

  1. Jae Han Min Says:

As I apply to this dental program for the semester 2009, I want you to know who I am at this moment, where I have come from and hope to be. My name is Jae Han Min, and I am from South Korea. I have just entered my senior year at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and am majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and economics. Having majored in biology as an undergraduate, I would now like to concentrate on actual experience in the scientific field of dental medicine by participating in this adventurous dental program.
My interest in science dates back to my years in high school in which I excelled in earth science, chemistry, and biology. I was active student who participated in everyone’s conversation during the class. I also enjoyed sports activities and was interested in liberal arts, especially music. I enjoyed singing songs in front of an audience. When I was a senior, I took advanced college level science courses and found no difficulty learning them. I had no problem earning on A grade and ultimately received the academic outstanding award in science.
When I began my undergraduate studies at UNCG, I was able to choose from a full range of science courses, all of which tended to reinforce my intense interest in science. I focus mainly on biology and chemistry. I had the opportunity to study a number of chemical reactions and structures of different organisms in laboratory classes, and these courses have been both enjoyable and enlightening, providing me with new insight into many aspects of my field.
I was rather not a quite student who sat down the chair thinking of what I am going to learn for the next class. I am a very sociable person who enjoys an entertaining night out but at the same time I understand the importance of studying. After one year of college, I spent one year and half at UNCG as a president in Korean Student Organization, one of student organizations. While there, I had to think rationally and provide leadership in a variety of challenging situations. Meanwhile, I have been doing Taekwondo, one of martial art originated from Korea, as a favorite hobby since I was elementary school student. I gained the third degree black belt by completing belt exam and gold medals by winning Taekwondo competition associated by Busan athletic institute of my city. With the third degree black belt, I have also taught children Taekwondo as their instructor assisting the head master in the United States and Korea.
In the realm of biology, I have worked in undergraduate genetic research labs with Dr. Remington in the fall semester of 2007. We dealt with the plant gene of rock cress, Arabidopsis Lyrata, and the genetic cross between Norway and North Carolina plants. In the lab, we ran the gel on the PCR products of the Arabidopsis Lyrata gene with different restriction enzymes to find out polymorphism sites for genomic sequences. I also have developed a special interest in the field of biochemistry by working in the labs of Dr. Norman Chui summer of 2007. Our group was introduced to use many types of scientific equipment, such as ultra-violet absorbance spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography. One experiment involved separating oxyguanosine from guanine in HPLC based on the optimum wavelength of 274nm that these compounds can absorb. My experience during my undergraduate research has enabled me to be independent and organized which should prepare me for the furthering education and advancing my degree. Also, in the real field of dental experience, I had helped out my cousin, Jongsuk, Lee, who were running personal dental hospital in Washington D.C., arrangement of patients’ medical history or insurance chart and helped patients feel comfortable during examinations and procedures.
I am highly aware of many competitive applicants for dental programs, and my conversations with several of your alumni have served to deepen my interest in attending. I believe what I have acquired through my own experience or practice will have useful applications in the future. The famous saying that “seeing is believing” can be understood in this context. Through this program, I will also have the chance to talk and interact with people with similar aspiration and goals. I am looking forward to this challenging opportunity as it will be and an unforgettable experience of my graduate life. I am excited to start the process of becoming a competent dentist.
