Editing: 3 Ideas for Better Stories

Not only beginners, but even experienced essay writers sometimes suffer from too much detalization. People tend to confuse genres of writing and use too much information in places where it is not necessary. Leo Tolstoy was known and famous for his passages that were at least two pages long. His times are gone, and modern readers are looking for brevity and clarity rather than long descriptions and paraphrases. Here are three ideas on how to get rid of data that makes a story look overloaded and boring:

  • If you feel that your story sounds clumsy and heavy, try to present it in a form of a dialogue. It doesn’t mean that you have to give up desirable prose. Dialogue is the fastest and easiest way to eliminate boring details. Once you start writing, you’ll see how a story becomes more and more clear and easy to understand. If you are rewriting a big piece, don’t try to make everything in one day. Human’s brains tend to lose concentration. Once you get tired, your work becomes less productive. Distribute the work evenly, and don’t forget to treat yourself with timeouts.
  • The first rule of writing says, “Show rather than tell”. That’s what you should do with the story. Instead of simply telling the reader what your character or scene looks like, show it. This gives a touch of realism and psychological effect to writing and deepens it. Determine what is necessary, and what can be easily eliminated. Make the readers chase the character trying to discover his/her nature. But also save some details (one or two, no more) that will make everything look not as simple. In other words, create an illusion of understanding that will keep the readers interested in reading, but give out the final details in the end. Save the best for last.
  • Before you will writing essay, try to give brief description of main actions and characters in your essay. Determine details that are absolutely necessary for complete understanding, and information that is not extremely important, but gives emotional stokes. Now you should work with the outline – facts that are important. Once the story is constructed, fill it with emotions and descriptions, but don’t overdo. Remember that you can always add details, if there is a shortage of them. But you have to be able to cut out information without the risk of ruining the overall flow of the story.
