Writing Help: What a GCSE Coursework Is
Posted on February 5, 2007
A GCSE coursework refers to the General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a set of qualifications taken by the secondary students of Britain, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Despite the popular opinions, GCSE coursework is not compulsory. As a matter of fact, this kind of testing is optional, but it covers the most basic and widespread studies such as English, Math, History, and Sciences. GCSE itself is a two-year course, during which students pick and study those subjects that they are willing to complete in order to pass examinations and receive certificates.
GСSE coursework is the biggest concern of all students. Preparations for the exams starts way before the actual examination date. Luckily, modern technologies allow students to pass online testing that give them experience and knowledge before the actual exams take place.
As to students that fail to present good results on GCSE coursework, they get a “U”. “U” stands for “unclassified”, and the subject that is marked this way is not included into the final certificate.
Coursework is helpful in developing students’ practical skills. When preparing to pass it, students also learn how to consolidate skills covered in class, develop study skills, and teach how to search for information needed to successfully pass the testing.
GCSE basic course covers:
- English and English Literature: students are expected to write in a wide variety of styles and respond to a range of texts, both literary, non-literary and media texts. As to English Literature, they will have to get acquainted with a wide range of literature, and also pick literary works on their own choice.
- Math: students are encouraged to develop their personal understanding and usage of mathematical terms, formulae and concepts.
- Science: students will learn about scientific theories and use them to explain a wide variety of questions which are of interest and of relevance to society.
- Citizenship: the intention to develop an understanding of the social structure and to produce well informed citizens who will participate and engage fully in society.
- Business: students will get acquainted with knowledge from all core areas, and business theories and concepts.
- Foreign language: this course teaches listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.
- Geography: includes observation and survey work, data presentation and analysis, and the formulation and presentation of personal opinions and attitudes.
- Health and Social Care: this course allows students to explore the sector and the possible career options that may be open to them, without losing the flexibility of transfer to other occupational areas.
- History: students will be required to analyze evidence, detect bias and inaccuracy, put themselves into the shoes of people in the past and put recent events into their historical context.
- Physical Education: both practical and theoretical elements, these components provide practical activities.
Regardless of the intensity of the course, GCSE has its enemies. A lot of critics believe that this system takes the focus away from the theoretical side of some important subjects. Nevertheless, GCSE coursework is still the main event in the lives of almost all British students at the age of 14-16.
