Learning to Write or Learning to Lie?
Posted on January 19, 2007
It seems like no matter how hard you prepare, your lies are always obvious. Even though you have a strong alibi, write and learn by heart the whole story, and then tell it to your teacher, acting even better then Kate Winslet in “Titanic”, he or she will be sure that your story is 100% fake.
All teachers have had experience with lies and students that do it on the ordinary basis. And teachers are good students. In no time they learn all possible techniques for egregious lie.
These techniques are actually pretty obvious. The moment you start lying, your body wants to resist it. It can be evident from a number of micro movements of your hands and fingers, lips and face muscles, eyes and eyebrows. Have you ever thought why a lot of politicians, when giving reports, stand still and look straight into the camera? They try to minimize their gestures for the sake of successful lies.
Where do teachers look at when they want to make sure you’re being sincere?
1. At your palms. Hands with palms up signalize truthfulness. If you are hiding your hands behind your back, it may be a checkpoint for your teacher. When he or she sees that you avoid showing your palms, he may pay more attention not only to your entire pose, but to your story as well. And if it is full of emotions (and emotions are always followed by wide arm gestures), but your palms are behind your back, you are as close to failure, as Bill Clinton was once. By the way, a lot of people, acquainted with this rule, tried to lie with their palms up. They didn’t succeed.
2. By putting your hands to your mouth you subconsciously try to stop the lips from saying lies. This gesture will look suspicious, anyways. You can say that you were just scratching your nose. Uh-uh. No good. When people are scratching noses, they try to make it more obvious, so that it wouldn’t appear like they are doing nose-picking:-P. Also, they try to make it quickly. Holding your hand at your mouth or putting finger to your nose will make the teacher look like a CSI agent.
3. Similar to “hand-mouth” is the eye-scratching gesture. When you rub your eyes, you close them, and don’t look into the face of a person you are lying to. So don’t be surprised if your teacher takes a red marker and writes a word “Liar” on your forehead.
4. When people lie, their neck muscles start itching. Probably this is the reason why a lot of liars pull their collars aside. Plus, this gesture is really obvious. What will you say as an excuse? An old war wound?
There’s nothing more embarrassing than being caught at lying. And when you know that you are trapped, your body reacts immediately. So, do you really want to stand in front of your teacher with your cheeks read and your hands shaking? Or do you prefer to go and finally complete your writing assignment? I’d prefer the second, for it has more options. You can either study for class, or study books that teach you how to lie properly
