Web Review: BenchPrep.com

Posted by Jack Milgram to

This next service could be a great solution for students who don’t perform well on tests.

Even very smart people can be sabotaged by nervous tension. Some folks fail such tests purely from the sweaty palm syndrome, or panic.

ACT, NPTE, MCAT; do these acronyms scare the spit out of you? In that case, the service we are going to discuss is the right thing for you! It’s called BenchPrep.com and it offers effective training for your examinations in a convenient form. Since these tests can often shape the direction of a person’s career, we think any help in this area is worth examining closely.

Usually, as you have probably noticed, we start by listing the pros and cons of any service we review. However, this time we are going to take a different direction. Why? Because, frankly, we haven’t been able to find many negative features worth mentioning regarding this service. Of course, we don’t want this article to look like a promotion (and it is not), but in this specific case – there’s a paucity of negatives on which to elaborate. So let’s proceed.

The first thing that you notice about the service is the quality of the website and the information it contains. We know that you might consider site design to be irrelevant. However, knowing how much effort good web design requires, we know that if the quality is good and the layout and flow thoughtful, it reflects something significant. It means that substantial resources were allocated to creating an outstanding user experience.

If the website is easy to use, it suggests that the firm is concerned about visitors to the site.

When considering Benchprep.com, it’s difficult to disagree on this issue. The design is simple but appealing.

The menu is easy to use, and not confusing. A bit more information would not hurt, but that is a minor issue and we don’t want to distract our readers with that.

The service offers sample tests for some of the most important examinations in your life. The tests come in three convenient formats – for the iPad, iPhone, and computer. You can select each one of these and shift between platforms whenever you want. That’s exceedingly convenient, because the flexibility of such a process is practically unlimited.

The great thing about the tests Benchprep.com offers is that they offer full user experience. This means that you’ll get to work with practically all of the assignments included in the tests. The package also offers you the opportunity to retake the tests and compare your scores with previous results. This will help you to determine your strengths and weaknesses and become a better student in the end. Of course, the tests also offer you reviews of your answers.

Thus, you can actually see where you were wrong. It doesn’t explain exactly why you were wrong. Nevertheless, for many people, seeing the correct answer is usually enough of a clue to help figure out why and where they made a factual or calculation error (based on the type of test they’ve taken).

The quality of the reviewed material is unquestionable – the majority of the materials/tests come from McGraw-Hill.

We are sure that if you are a student, you’ve probably already heard this company name before.

Benchprep.com works in cooperation with the company, so you can expect to receive up-to-date, quality materials for your tests. Benchprep.com also has partners that offer test materials – Nova Press and Finsage.

These names should be familiar, as well, to most of students in the midst of their educational careers.

The site also offers a chance to communicate with others who are studying for, and taking, similar tests. This leverages the experience of other students. You also receive a lifetime right to the test-prep materials you purchase.

There are also many additional materials displayed on the website, describing each of the available products, including screen shots. Therefore, you actually have a good opportunity to check it all out before purchasing.

Another great feature is the review material available with each one of the tests. Thus, you can read the materials, prepare yourself, and then take the test. It is basically like experiencing a real test, but with no consequences for your academic scores! It seems a bit masochistic to take the tests over and over again, but if that is what it takes to secure a grade or even a scholarship, then it’s only for the best!

The main negative aspect that we’ve noticed is the limited range of tests. Of course, there is an almost limitless array of stuff that the site could potentially address, covering many academic majors. However, we would like to see more a greater variety of materials, like in-course tests and/or examinations.

That would be really convenient and powerful. The project is evolving, so we are guessing that this kind of stuff could be on the way.

So, good luck with your tests, and be sure to check out BenchPrep.com to increase your chance of successfully passing key standardized tests.

I just started using BenchPrep for the GMAT and have had really enjoyed it so far – definitely makes it easier to study between classes, on the bus, etc. It’s pretty much the same material that I’ve received in my books, just a little more interesting because it’s a bit more interactive.

Thank you for the feedback, Lisa! We definitely agree with you: interactivity of BenchPrep is one of its main features! We hope that it will help you to prepare for the GMAT! Good luck! :)

Without finding any relevant reviews I decided to buy their GRE prep course in August 11, and I was expecting prep course based on the new format, but I got course based on old format. So I tried to contact their costumer service asking for refund, and after sending them few emails, I finally got a reply(Sophie) saying that they are planning to update their GRE content by the end of August. I didn’t receive any futher update from these guys, then I contacted them back in 2nd week of September 11, and this time I received email(again from Sophie) apologizing and promising that I would receive update by the end of the weekend. Their that weekend never came and I being very disappointed contacted them again, this time she said( again Sophie ) I should receive update by the end of the day. This time I received a email from these guys asking for $50 to get the update. Being very angry and frustrated I sent them final email saying that If I didn’t receive my refund in 3 days I am going dispute the charges through my credit card. Finally I received my money back on the 3rd day(after 2 months). I would not suggest any serious GRE taker to waste their time with these guys.

We are sorry to hear, that your experience with BenchPrep.com was not positive at all. I’m sure, like with any service – there are satisfied and dissatisfied customers. So we’ll let the people decide whether to order anything from BP or not, based on the review and your informative comment. Thank you for your feedback!

This “review” came out exactly the same time Benchprep starting several online coupon campaigns. I wouldn’t call this a review anyway, as the reviewer is just giving us the high points while glossing over or justifying the lows.
“A bit more information would not hurt, but that is a minor issue and we don’t want to distract our readers with that.” Im sorry? I’ve never heard of a review that assumes the readers are too easily distracted to discuss possible negatives about the product. Isn’t that the point?
Not to mention the multiple grammatical errors in both the review and the responses from Benchprep in the comments (which I also find shady.) If Benchprep can’t use simple grammar, I think I’d be skeptical of them prepping me for a Masters prep class.
I was considering purchasing the GMAT prep course, but after reading this “review” and readers customer service experiences, I have serious doubts about the company, so I think I’ll pass. I don’t like companies using tricks to try and sell their products.

      Hello Rachel.
First of all, we wanted to inform you that the review was written independently from BenchPrep.com. We agree that the review doesn’t contain that much negativity. We started this series of articles just recently. And we’re trying to improve the review process. It’s a work in progress and the main purpose of these articles is to highlight the particular services, let our audience know about them (as you can see there are dozens of reviews posted on the blog).

We’re also concentrating on available features, and less on the stuff that is not there. Of course, as you said, this doesn’t fully comply with requirements for a review, but we are working to make them more objective. As you did – anyone is free to search for the information online and in a lot of cases, pertaining certain reviews, that’s what we suggest – go online and search for yourself. It wouldn’t be reasonable to base your opinion just on one review.

The problem with online info is that you can’t actually prove something, and I can’t prove to you that we acted independently from BenchPrep.com – so if you simply don’t find the service trustworthy – then don’t use it. When we reviewed it (having a couple of other test prep services in mind) our thoughts were mostly positive, and that’s what the review reflected. Further on we realised that the review has to be in sync with what the people say online, that’s why a lot of reviews after that one include opinions, based on what we saw online.

Anyway, I’m sure, you did the right choice for yourself. Good luck with the exam preparations, I’m sure they will work out great for you!
