MLA Citation Style: When to Use

MLA stands for the Modern Language Association. It is widely used not only in the USA, but in the countries abroad. It is also a format accepted by a lot of journals and magazines as well as colleges and universities.
 
The association recommends using it when writing all kinds of works on liberal arts and humanities including comparative literature, literary criticism, media studies, cultural studies, and related disciplines.

MLA Citation Style: Official publication

There are two official publications of the MLA citation styles:

  • The MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing, second edition (ISBN 0-87352-699-6). This edition is aimed at advanced-level writers of scholarly books and articles.
  • The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, sixth edition (ISBN 0-87352-986-3), is custom written college essay for secondary-school and undergraduate college and university students

1. What is the basic page formatting in MLA style?

Double-space legible font on a standard 8.5 x 11-inch paper with 1 inch margins from all sides. Make the first row of every paragraph one half-inch and make only one space after periods or other punctuation marks. Place header numbers consequently in the upper right-hand corner one half-inch from the top.

2. How do I format a title page?

List your name, name of your instructor, course and date in the upper left-hand corner of the first page. Center the title. Do not underline it or write in all capitals. A header in the upper right-hand corner must include your last name and a page number.

3. Where should I place footnotes and endnotes?

MLA recommends that you limit the amount of notes; however, some amount of remarks is essential. Place the notes on a separate page before the Works Cited page. The title of the notes’ page should look the same: Notes. List them by consecutive superscript Arabic numbers.

4. Is the structure firm for all kinds of essay writing?
