How to Define a Dissertation
Posted on July 11, 2008
If you need to define a dissertation, a sentence or two will not do it. A dissertation writing is too big of a process to oversimplify it. To define a dissertation, you need to know all the inside outs of it and understand the process of writing it.
You can define a dissertation in many ways. Here they are:
- Define a dissertation from an academic point of view. In this situation, you can look at this paper as if it is the final, the most important step to getting a degree. Many students long to get it, because it plays a great role in a resume. You can define a dissertation as a battle, where someone loses. Not everyone reaches the end – defends their dissertation. This is why you should take the process seriously.
- Another way to define a dissertation is to call it a long piece of writing. Really, a dissertation is much longer and wider than a regular academic paper. It takes more than a couple of days to finish it. A student is given up to several years to complete the work. This is why you can define dissertations as something big and impressive.
- Define a dissertation as a personal research, your own input into the field of study you are working in. Essays, term papers, and other researches are more often a digestion of the already published and known theories, whilst the direction taken in a dissertation is totally up to you. This is why you should define a dissertation as an authentic, original piece of research writing.
- Finally, you can define dissertations even easier – according to a degree. Now, are you getting Master’s or PhD? MBA or Psychology? All of this defines a dissertation as a certain piece of writing.

The Points Which You Should Know about a Dissertation\Thesis Structure
Posted on March 12, 2008
Of course, the problem of structuring a dissertation\thesis properly is very important and actual for the students at the very first steps of dissertation writing. That is why I made up my mind to write a little article, where all the necessary hints on dissertation\thesis writing will be given.
Since we are talking about a dissertation\thesis structure, this information should be structured as well.
- Dissertation\thesis abstract should have about 500 words, where the author should write some general information on his\her work. The main purpose of this part of your dissertation\thesis is to present your work and prove that it is worth reading!
- Dissertation\thesis introduction is 10% of your project. Here you should make a detailed (but do not go too much into the details) presentation of your work – the purposes, the methods, the significance, the novelty – well, everything that is important for your dissertation\thesis.
- Dissertation\thesis literature review is 20% of your work. These 20% should show how your project is connected with already existing pieces of work. You should study different sources and give the estimation of their impact on the science development.
- Dissertation\thesis main body consists of several chapters, where you have to enlighten the methodology of your work, the findings and interesting facts about the topic. Try to make this chapter interesting. You should make your dissertation\thesis good enough, and this mostly depends on the quality of your dissertation\thesis main body.
- Dissertation\thesis conclusion should present the results of your project and possible recommendations, which might be given to those who would like to continue investigating your topic. Make your conclusion sound strong and effective!

Geography Dissertation Writing Tips
Posted on February 9, 2008
Geography dissertation is one of the hardest parts of your academic journey, if you are studying geography, naturally. A number of students experience reasonable anxiety when facing the need to write a geography dissertation that will sum up several years of their intensive studies.
Here are some useful tips on geography dissertation writing:
- Decide on your dissertation topic. That is one of the most important parts of your geography dissertation.
- You may have no choice as to the topic for your geography dissertation, if it is already assigned. If this is the case, you will not be ready to jump to the next step. Think about the type and purpose of the paper you are expected to produce. Make sure your topic is fairly specific. If your geography dissertation topic is too broad, find the possibility to choose a narrower subtopic to discuss.
- Gather data. Make sure that you have enough information and evidence to support your geography dissertation topic.
- If you have not been assigned a topic, then the whole world lies before you. This, actually, means that you are free to choose a topic for your geography dissertation that is of interest to you. This will make your work a strong and effective one.
