A+ Academic Writing Skills

So, what does “academic writing skills” mean? You’ve probably heard it a hundred times from hundreds of people, but still don’t know how you can obtain an A+ on your paper. Stop feeling confused, for the answer is even easier than you can think. Keys to good academic writing are researching, preparing, writing and reflecting on your writing. And now let’s take a closer look at these components.

1. Researching for Writing

Definition:

Once a topic is assigned/chosen, start looking for information.

General guidelines:

- Using the Internet. Spend some time following the links to examine the pages and sites which have been listed. When using web help, be selective. Not all the guidelines, articles and researches are provided by professional writers.
- A library is more helpful in getting a broad overview on the subject. Start in the reference room, with some general sources. Search the library’s catalog. Finally, take a trip to “the stacks” and browse the shelves in your subject area to see what titles are available.

Understanding Teacher’s Psychology

If someone decided to classify teachers, the classification would’ve been as impressive as the dynasty tree of the Bourbon royal family. But there is one point at which they all meet – puzzling students.

Sometimes it’s so hard to understand what these teachers want from you when assigning you with writing papers. Some may choose to provide you with detailed instructions on writing, but others will just play guerillas. They limit themselves to spilling some general ideas, but after that wait impatiently to see how you will show your researching and writing skills. Read more

Learn to Listen and Enjoy Listening

Finding new friends can be a painful process. At least once in our lives we have to move from one place to another. Switching houses is just part of a problem. But if you are moving to a totally new place, you have to change an educational institution, too. Some people are looking forward to seeing new places and meeting new friends. But there are some that think about first day in new school, college, or university, and their hearts stop. For them, there can’t be a bigger torture than walking down the hallway in a crowd of strangers, and desperately looking for at least one familiar face.

An atmosphere of comfort has a huge impact on academic excellence. If you feel safe and sure, you can easily concentrate on your study. But if you feel yourself a lonely fish in a sea of unfamiliar people, you will be searching for a way out, and it might have a negative effect on your work.

Let’s examine the situation together. New people are not like old friends. You don’t know enough background information about them, and sometimes you feel unsure if you can ask some questions, or it will confuse your interlocutors. The first impression is very important. And you are afraid that you may seem rude, indifferent, suspicious… Read more

Learning to Write or Learning to Lie?

It seems like no matter how hard you prepare, your lies are always obvious. Even though you have a strong alibi, write and learn by heart the whole story, and then tell it to your teacher, acting even better then Kate Winslet in “Titanic”, he or she will be sure that your story is 100% fake.

All teachers have had experience with lies and students that do it on the ordinary basis. And teachers are good students. In no time they learn all possible techniques for egregious lie.

These techniques are actually pretty obvious. The moment you start lying, your body wants to resist it. It can be evident from a number of micro movements of your hands and fingers, lips and face muscles, eyes and eyebrows. Have you ever thought why a lot of politicians, when giving reports, stand still and look straight into the camera? They try to minimize their gestures for the sake of successful lies. Read more

It’s My Day

Sometimes it’s better to stop for a moment and enjoy the minute of life.

I realized it was the moment, when after mentioning the words “study”,”essay”, “written dissertation>” and coursework my hands started shaking, and my feat – bending. I definitely needed some relaxation. All this time I was working hard on my grades. I even forgot when was the last time I got out with my friends and had coffee. Unbelievable!

So I just sat down and told myself, “Girl, if you don’t give yourself a break, you can forget about being able to learn anything else”. I thought about possible options. Do I want to go to the movies? No. Doing something ordinary won’t help me a bit. Do I want to go shopping? I don’t think so. Plus, my closet is going to declare war on me if I try to put at least one more shirt into it. I can barely close it. My eyes stopped at the corner of the room. There, in an old brown bag, laid my roller skates. They are waiting patiently for me for already half a year. Of course! How could I forget about them?

I called my best friend: “What would you say about spending the rest of the day on roller skates?” I knew she would support me. Read more
